For accounting firms, February through April is generally the busiest time of the year. So how do you relieve the stress? The answer for 43 employees at Mountjoy Chilton Medley LLP was to dive into frigid pools of water on Saturday, Feb. 26.
It was all part of the 2011 Polar Bear Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics of Kentucky. Hundreds of participants, and thousands of spectators were on hand to watch as teams of plungers braved the 36-degree water temperature in pools set outside Louisville’s Tumbleweed on River Road.
The MCM Numb n Numb-er team, sporting pirate garb, raised $13,000 to finish as the second-highest team both in dollars raised and number of plungers. The Ice Socks team, composed of 80 members from various companies, was the top finisher.
For MCM, a Kentucky-based full-service accounting firm headquartered in Louisville, the Polar Bear Plunge has become an annual event. In 2010, 27 MCM plungers raised more than $8,500 for the Special Olympics.
“We were really excited to help out with such a great cause,” said MCM team captain Scott Maloy. “It’s become quite a popular community event for our firm.”
